What In The World Is A “PRP Facial”?

Microneedling PRP facials are an increasingly in-demand treatment, not just because it is everywhere on social media and popularized by celebrities, but because patients love the results.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that’s used to treat skin concerns via collagen production. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment may help those looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles and stretch marks.

During the procedure, your licensed specialist makes small pricks on the skin with a pen-like tool. The pinpricks are so small that you likely will not notice them after the procedure. Your specialist will move the tool evenly across your skin so that the new skin that rejuvenates will be even, too.

The micro-injuries are stimulating deep collagen production, the idea is that pinpricks from the procedure cause slight injury to the skin and that the skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue. This new skin tissue is, in turn, more even in tone and texture.

Microneedling vs. Home Rollers

Microneedling is a professional procedure that is performed in med spas and licensed medical offices only. To save money, some people opt for home rollers instead. Unlike professional microneedling, rollers do not puncture the skin hardly at all.

While this might seem a less painful option, the problem is that you will not achieve the same results. The punctures made during professional micro-needling are designed to induce skin rejuvenation.

With a roller device, you may achieve brighter skin at best, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Using devices like the SkinPen is the best way to ensure that the puncture go deep enough into the dermis to achieve the best results.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and how does it work with Microneedling?

This serum is a combination of growth factors and concentrated platelets that stimulate cell growth and attract your stem cells to activate natural healing and repair. To obtain PRP, we draw your blood, and spin it to separate the red blood cells from the plasma portion. During this process, the plasma separates into two parts, one of which contains a high concentration of platelets, or “platelet-rich” plasma (PRP). This portion is used during the procedure.

The PRP is applied to the skin during the microneedling procedure. The PRP will penetrate deep into the skin to promote healing, minimize inflammation, and support skin rejuvenation.

The power duo of microneedling and PRP can improve skin texture and tone, minimize the appearance of pores, smooth wrinkles and fine lines and minimize the appearance of hyperpigmentation and scarring (acne, stretch marks, you name it). It’s a perfect treatment for patients who are just getting started in aesthetics, seeking a high reward ‘maintenance’ treatment, or as a quick fix before an event when you want your complexion to look its best.

At Genesis we use the first FDA certified device the SkinPen for our microneedling procedures. Our specialist, Michelle Scott, PA-C is specially trained in microneedling with the SkinPen device and is overseen by Dr. Velling and Dr. Kinder.
