STEM CELL THERAPY

WHAT IS STEM CELL THERAPY?

Stem Cell Therapy is a form of Regenerative Medicine that uses your own body’s stem cells to heal damaged tissue that is otherwise unable to repair itself.  New growth of healthy tissues is activated by injecting these regenerating stem cells into the damaged area. These cells have the potential to restore injured muscle, ligaments, cartilage, tissue, and tendons.
This state of the art procedure is performed in our clinic and is typically complete within 90 minutes. We only use autologous (from one’s body) adult stem cells at this time – we do not use fat stem cells as these are currently not FDA approved.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Stem Cell Therapy takes stem cells, in addition to other healing cells and proteins from your own body and re-injects them back into the affected area. Once injected, stem cells transform into various types of cells that help reduce inflammation, and stimulate regeneration by signaling local cells to create new cartilage that in turn repairs the damaged tissues.

HOW IS IT PERFORMED?

This is a minimally invasive procedure done entirely in our procedure room, under fluoroscopic (x-ray) or ultrasound guidance. Bone marrow, which contains a high concentration of stem cells, is taken out from the back of a patient’s hip. Once removed, it is placed in a state of the art centrifuge to concentrate the stem cells, and isolate the unwanted cells. The Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) is then re-injected into the affected site.

  • Osteoarthritis: Knee, Hip, or Shoulder
  • Ligament Injuries: Knee (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL) or Plantar Fasciitis

  • Joint Sprains/Strains: Ankle, Elbow, Shoulder, Wrist, Finger

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF STEM CELL THERAPY?

It is a non-surgical, non-opioid, natural treatment option to help reduce your pain and get your life back. This procedure has minimal downtime and avoids painful rehabilitation periods that come with surgery.
Stem Cell Therapy is a natural, safe treatment that allows your body to rebuild its own healthy tissue with no risk of rejection because the stem cells come from your own body. The end result is regeneration of a damaged area, which leads to pain reduction, and ultimately regained functionality.

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTED RESULTS?

Most patients begin to experience relief in their pain in as little as 2-3 months.
Over a period of 6-12 months, the majority of our patients continue to have improvement in pain, a decrease in inflammation, and an increase in mobility and function.
For many, these treatments can help get their life back.

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR THE PROCEDURE

We will provide you with complete pre-procedure instructions prior to your appointment. General recommendations include:

HOW TO PREPARE

  • 7 Days Before: Blood thinning agents should be discontinued (please consult with us and your prescribing provider prior to your appointment). Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications including Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Ibuprofen etc.
  • 3 Days Before: Avoid alcohol, caffeine and smoking.
  • 24 Hours Before: Increase your intake of fluid, adding 2 glasses of water to your normal intake in the morning, afternoon and evening.
  • Day Of: If you will be receiving sedation, a member of our staff will review any food/drink limitation(s) and confirm the presence of your driver.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE PROCEDURE

Stem Cell Therapy is performed in our procedure room using state of the art Fluoroscopic or ultrasound guidance. We use Autologous (from your own body) Stem Cells only, it is safe and natural way to allow our body to heal. Your appointment should last approximately 90 minutes.
  1. Consultation: Before the procedure gets under way, Dr. Velling will discuss your medical history and any recent changes to your health. The Genesis team will complete your intake and administer sedation if arranged. Once complete, we will begin the procedure.
  2. Bone Marrow Aspiration: Bone marrow aspirate is collected from the posterior (back) hip area, called the iliac crest. Dr. Velling will numb this area using a local anesthetic and insert a needle into the center of the crest. The Genesis team will then  harvest the bone marrow and centrifuge the aspirate into a small injectable volume of bone marrow concentrate (BMAC).
  3. Numbing the Treatment Area: Dr. Velling will prep and then inject a local anesthetic agent into the treatment/affected area to minimize discomfort.
  4. Administer Stem Cells: Using imaging guidance and under sterile conditions, the cells and growth factors are injected into the affected site. Dr. Velling’s vast experience with injections ensures that the cells are reaching their intended areas so patients have the best chance for maximum results

POST-PROCEDURE CARE

  • We recommend that you begin to perform light activities in the week following your procedure, and after 4-6 weeks you can resume normal activities.
  • The Stem Cells typically stimulates a series of biological responses, so you may experience slightly increased pain in the treatment area for 7-10 days following the procedure.
  • Vigorous exercise or impact should be avoided for 1 month depending on the areas being treated.
  • Avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medicine for at least 2 weeks after the procedure.
